This project consists of 18 cyanotypes on watercolor paper, in A3 format, depicting one of history's most captivating cities, where culture and history intertwine to create an unforgettable journey through the ancient world.
I hope that this project inspires deeper reflection on the connection between the past and the present and encourages the preservation of the world's cultural treasures. Pompeii is more than an ancient city; it is an endless source of inspiration and knowledge that, through art, can continue to live in the hearts and minds of people
Step back in time and delve into the mysteries of Pompeii, a city frozen in history by the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Here, every corner holds the promise of discovery, where the remnants of a flourishing ancient society reveal stories of triumph, tragedy, and the enduring resilience of the human spirit amidst the chaos of natural disaster.
I find history incredibly fascinating, particularly I have a
deep passion for the history of civilizations, as I consider it the ultimate expression of human ingenuity.
Today, Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, attracting millions of visitors who wish to walk among the ruins and immerse themselves in the history of this extraordinary ancient city, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and renowned as one of the world's most iconic archaeological treasures.
However, the fate of Pompeii changed dramatically on August 24th, 79 AD, when the nearby volcano Vesuvius erupted cataclysmically. The violent eruption buried the city under a rain of ash, pumice, and volcanic mud, perfectly preserving it over time.
For centuries, Pompeii lay forgotten beneath the earth, until archaeological excavations in the 18th century brought its streets, houses, and buried treasures back to light. The archaeological discoveries have provided valuable insights into daily life in ancient Rome, preserving a snapshot of an entire civilization for future generations.
In the 1st century AD, Pompeii was a thriving Roman city located in the region of modern-day Campania, southern Italy. Founded in the 6th century BC by the Osci, an ancient Italic people, Pompeii later became a Roman colony in 80 BC
The city flourished due to its strategic location along trade routes and the fertility of the surrounding soil. With a population of around 20,000 inhabitants, Pompeii was known for its wealth, magnificent villas, and sumptuous public buildings.
I embarked on this project with the intention of delving into the multifaceted aspects of Roman civilization, seeking to uncover its rich tapestry of culture, society, politics, and daily life through meticulous research and exploration.
